Algeria inaugurates third largest mosque in the world

Algeria recently inaugurated the third largest mosque globally and the largest in Africa, boasting a stunning architectural feat and significant religious significance.

Initially opened for worshipers in October 2020, the grand mosque’s inauguration ceremony was delayed due to President Abdul Majeed Tabun’s battle with COVID-19. Situated in the capital, Algiers, the mosque stands out with the world’s tallest minaret, towering at a remarkable height of 267 meters. Equipped with elevators and a viewing platform, the minaret offers panoramic views of Algiers and the Gulf.

Locally referred to as Jama Al-Jari, the mosque spans approximately 70 acres, featuring modern infrastructure and intricate interior decor inspired by Andalusian style. Adorned with wood, marble, and other precious materials, the mosque’s construction spanned seven years and cost over $800 million.

While the mosque’s area is smaller compared to the holiest sites in Mecca and Medina, its significance as a religious landmark and architectural marvel is widely acknowledged. As President Abdul Majid Tabun’s term approaches its end, speculation lingers on whether he will seek reelection, with his future plans yet to be confirmed.
