Karachi is facing an acute water shortage after repeated electricity breakdowns at the Dhabeji pumping station disrupted the city’s water supply following the first monsoon spell.

According to officials of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB), three of the 10 water supply lines connecting Dhabeji to Karachi were damaged due to back pressure caused by repeated power interruptions.
The disruption has resulted in a shortage of around 90 crore gallons of water over the past three days, severely affecting water supplies to several parts of the city.
Three Dhabeji Water Lines Damaged
Karachi receives water from the Dhabeji pumping station through 10 major supply lines. However, four major electricity breakdowns during the past three days disrupted pumping operations and caused back pressure in the system.
KWSB officials said the pressure resulted in three water lines bursting, further affecting the supply of water to Karachi.
Dhabeji Chief Engineer Iftikhar Mirza told the media that the city had suffered a shortage of approximately 90 crore gallons during the three-day disruption.
The resident engineer said repairing and restoring the damaged connections could take around three days.
Several Karachi Areas Affected
The water shortage has affected several areas across Karachi, including:
- Gulshan-e-Iqbal
- Gulistan-e-Johar
- North Karachi
- North Nazimabad
- PECHS
- Other adjoining areas
The disruption has added to water supply difficulties for residents following the monsoon spell and repeated power interruptions at the pumping station.

The Managing Director of the Water Board has assured that efforts are underway to restore all three damaged connections, with the supply expected to improve by Friday.
Officials said the restoration of the damaged lines would help normalize water supplies across the affected areas.
