According to details, the telecom regulator has begun preparations to block WhatsApp accounts linked to mobile numbers that are no longer active or in use.

The PTA said inactive mobile numbers are being misused to operate WhatsApp accounts for fraud, scams and other illegal activities, prompting the authority to take action.

The regulator has directed telecom operators to ensure that WhatsApp accounts remain linked to active and currently valid mobile numbers.

Officials said the action could begin without any further notice.

The PTA has advised users to check the status of their SIM cards and update their WhatsApp accounts if they have changed their mobile numbers.

Users who have switched to a new number have been advised to use WhatsApp’s “Change Number” feature to transfer their account to the active number as soon as possible.

The PTA said timely updating of mobile numbers will help users retain access to their WhatsApp accounts and reduce the risk of fraud involving inactive numbers.

Users have been urged to verify their registered mobile numbers and take the necessary steps before enforcement action begins.
