PSX crashes nearly 1,700 points as broad-based selling hits KSE-100

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) closed sharply lower on Wednesday, as broad-based selling pulled the benchmark index down by 1,690.40 points, or 0.96%, to 174,776.59.

The benchmark KSE-100 Index opened the session under pressure and remained volatile, touching an intraday high of 175,841.83 before falling to a low of 174,562.87. The index had closed at 176,466.99 in the previous session.

Market participation remained active, with 610.18 million shares changing hands across the exchange in 399,198 trades. The total traded value stood at Rs31.86 billion.

Market breadth was firmly negative. Of the 569 stocks traded, 356 declined, while only 113 advanced and 100 remained unchanged, indicating widespread selling across the market.

CNERGY emerged as the volume leader, with 124.89 million shares traded. The stock closed at Rs14.66, down Rs0.34, after moving between Rs14.43 and Rs15.02.

WTL was the second most-traded stock, with 38.70 million shares changing hands. It closed at Rs1.13, down Rs0.03.

PRL bucked the broader negative trend, gaining Rs0.51 to close at Rs105.39 on turnover of 37.68 million shares. The stock traded as high as Rs107.50 and as low as Rs101.25 during the session.

Among other actively traded stocks, BOP declined Rs0.35 to Rs34.08 on volume of 25.40 million shares, while HASCOL gained Rs0.77 to close at Rs21.21 after 24.74 million shares were traded.

STLR fell Rs0.73 to Rs12.19, with 19.73 million shares changing hands, while TSBL edged up Rs0.04 to Rs2.45 on turnover of 16.26 million shares.

A day earlier, PSX closed lower on Tuesday, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index falling 508.68 points, or 0.29%, to settle at 176,466.99.

The index opened under pressure and traded between an intraday high of 177,800.28 and a low of 176,375.00, before ending below the previous close of 176,975.67.

Trading activity remained robust, with total market volume reported at 784.47 million shares. The value of traded shares stood at Rs37.41 billion, while 396,451 trades were recorded during the session.
