Karachi has witnessed a fresh wave of extortion incidents as at least four separate cases were reported in different areas of the city over the past 10 days, raising concerns among traders and residents.

According to media reports, the incidents were mainly recorded in New Karachi, North Karachi, and Preedy area of Karachi.

New Karachi alone reported two cases, while one case each emerged from North Karachi and Preedy. The affected individuals include shopkeepers from electronics and food businesses who were targeted through extortion demands and threatening messages.

In one case, an electronics market shopkeeper received a demand of Rs 2.5 million from an unidentified group. The victim has lodged a First Information Report (FIR) with local police, seeking protection and action against the suspects.

In another incident, two shopkeepers near Sindhi Hotel in New Karachi were sent extortion chits within days of each other. One demand of Rs 1.6 million was made on May 9, followed by another demand of Rs 1 million on May 17 targeting a nearby sweet shop owner.

Separately, a shopkeeper in the Nagan Chowrangi area also reported receiving an extortion demand of Rs 1.5 million. In several cases, the messages were accompanied by threats of violence, including warnings that victims would be harmed if they did not comply.

Local traders have expressed growing concern over the rising intimidation tactics, urging authorities to strengthen security and take immediate action against criminal networks operating in the city.

Police officials have confirmed that complaints have been registered and investigations are underway. Law enforcement agencies are working to trace the individuals behind the extortion network and provide protection to affected business owners.
