Average smartphone prices in Karachi have surged, putting new mobile phones beyond the reach of many consumers as major brands reportedly increase prices by Rs15,000 to Rs30,000 per handset.

Basic smartphones with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, which previously cost around Rs20,000 to Rs22,000, are now being sold or quoted at approximately Rs35,000 to Rs40,000 in some cases.

The price hike has particularly affected low- and middle-income households that depend on smartphones for education, work, banking, online transport services, communication and access to government applications.

As a result, many consumers are considering used or refurbished devices instead of buying new smartphones.

Rising Memory Chip Costs Behind Price Hike

Muhammad Rizwan Irfan, president of the Karachi Electronics Dealers Association, said the sharp rise in smartphone prices was not primarily driven by a significant increase in government taxes but largely by the rising cost of components used in mobile phones.

Muhammad Minhaj Gulfam, president of the Karachi Mobile and Electronics Dealers Association, similarly attributed the price hike to rising global prices of random access memory (RAM) and read-only memory (ROM).

Mian Abdul Rehman of the Pakistan Mobile Phone Manufacturers Association also identified higher RAM and ROM prices as key factors behind the increase in smartphone prices.

According to industry representatives, growing demand from artificial intelligence (AI) companies, robotics and data centres has put pressure on the global supply of memory chips. The rapid expansion of AI technology has increased the need for these components, while production has struggled to keep pace with rising demand.

As a result, memory chip costs have increased, raising smartphone manufacturing expenses. Manufacturers are passing on at least some of these additional costs to consumers, contributing to higher retail prices for new handsets.

Mobile Phone Dealers Report Falling Sales

The price increase has also affected mobile phone retailers across Karachi, with shopkeepers reporting weaker sales, supply shortages and continued price fluctuations.

One shopkeeper said consumers who previously purchased phones for around Rs20,000 were now struggling to afford models priced between Rs30,000 and Rs35,000.

Another dealer said uncertainty over prices and product availability had made it difficult for businesses to operate under stable market conditions.

Some buyers are turning to used devices or so-called kit phones, which may be imported without standard retail packaging or sold as refurbished devices.

However, these alternatives can carry concerns about battery condition, device history, software support, reliability and after-sales service.

Rising Smartphone Prices Threaten Digital Access

The rising cost of smartphones has added to the financial pressure on households already dealing with inflation and limited purchasing power.

With digital platforms increasingly used for education, employment, banking, transport and government services, consumers say affordable smartphones are essential for staying connected.

They have called for measures to improve the availability of entry-level devices and reduce the financial burden on buyers who cannot afford the latest price increases.

For many Karachi residents, the challenge is no longer simply choosing a smartphone with better features. It is finding a reliable device that fits within their household budget.
