Leader of the Opposition in the Sindh Assembly, Ali Khurshidi, has strongly criticized the federal government and the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) over what he described as an unbearable gas crisis in Karachi during the ongoing cold weather.
In a statement issued from the headquarters of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Pakistan in Bahadurabad, Ali Khurshidi condemned the performance of SSGC and federal authorities, saying that depriving Karachi’s residents of basic utilities in severe winter conditions is a clear injustice.
Ali Khurshidi said that for the past several days, gas supply in many areas of Karachi has either been completely suspended or provided at extremely low pressure.

As a result, citizens are facing serious hardship, particularly women, elderly people, children, and students. He added that kitchen stoves remain cold during freezing mornings and evenings, forcing families to rely on expensive LPG cylinders.
The opposition leader expressed concern that despite the lack of gas supply, citizens are still receiving hefty gas bills worth thousands of rupees.
He questioned the system, asking how consumers could be charged without being provided the service. “This is exploitation of the people under the guise of utility charges,” he said.

Khurshidi further stated that Karachi faces the same situation every winter due to outdated infrastructure and poor planning by SSGC.
He accused the federal government of failing to introduce reforms or modernize the gas distribution system, despite repeated crises over the years.
He said Karachi, which contributes significantly to the national economy, continues to be neglected when it comes to basic facilities. According to him, the ongoing gas shortage is not just a technical issue but a governance failure that directly affects daily life and public health.
