Crimes on the rise in Karachi, citizens lose over Rs 2.97 billion in 6 months

The crime rate in Karachi has risen sharply over the first six months of 2021. More than 22,000 incidents have been reported from January to June 15.

At Shahrah-e-Quaideen, criminals appear to be roaming free, with the police unable to curb street crimes.

According to Geo News, 22,295 crimes have been reported in the past six months, during this time Rs2.97 billion was looted from citizens.

The highest number of incidents were of theft and motorcycle snatching, the cumulative cost of the motorcycles snatched stands at over Rs1.30 billion.

More than Rs960 million were looted in 2,278 incidents of robbery, separately dacoits stole Rs160 million in 243 incidents from houses. Over Rs100 million were also lost in 185 incidents of shoplifting.

More than Rs3.5 million were looted in highway robberies while Rs6 million were looted in two bank robberies. More than Rs900,000 were robbed from 8 petrol pumps. 

Officials say these are statistics from cases that have been reported and that the actual amount of money and possessions looted from citizens could be much higher than this.
