A top adviser to United States (US) President Donald Trump accused India on Sunday of helping finance Russia’s war in Ukraine through oil trade.
According to Reuters, Stephen Miller, White House Deputy Chief of Staff and a key Trump aide, said in an interview, “President Trump has made it clear, India buying Russian oil to support this war is unacceptable.”
This marks one of the strongest criticisms of India from the Trump administration, despite it being a close ally.
Speaking on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures, Miller said, “People will be shocked to learn that India’s oil purchases from Russia nearly match China’s. That’s a stunning fact.”

Reuters reports that the Indian Embassy in Washington has not responded to the statement.
However, Indian government sources told Reuters that New Delhi will continue buying Russian oil despite US pressure.
Due to India’s continued purchase of Russian energy and military equipment, the US imposed a 25 percent import tax on Indian goods from August 01, 2025.
Trump also warned that if Russia fails to reach a peace deal with Ukraine, the US could impose up to a 100 percent tariff on products from countries that keep buying Russian oil.
