Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said more than 37,000 tons of Eid waste have been buried in trenches during the two-day citywide cleanup operation by the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board.
Speaking during his visit to several districts, Wahab said he personally inspected collection points alongside Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad and SSWMB MD Tariq Nizamani to review arrangements across Karachi.
He stated that 17,806 tons were disposed at Jam Chakro, 15,496 tons at Gond Pass, and 4,245 tons at Sharafi GTS, adding that the city will now wash major roads to control odor and pollution.
Wahab announced that rose water spray, lime powder, and fumigation will be carried out across key roads and neighborhoods to sanitize affected areas and improve environmental conditions.
He stressed that he and the SSWMB team have been on the ground since the first day of Eid ul Adha, ensuring citizens face no difficulties in garbage disposal during the festival.
The mayor admitted there is always room for improvement but noted this year’s performance has surpassed last year’s, especially with faster removal and better machinery deployment.
He pointed out that waste collection in New Karachi was unsatisfactory, prompting immediate action including additional machinery and show-cause notices to negligent companies and contractors.
Wahab assured that all collection points were cleared by night and will continue to be cleared until the operation concludes, followed by lime spraying and fumigation.
He thanked media outlets for highlighting issues promptly and stated that improvements were made wherever shortcomings were observed.
