National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has rejected K-Electric CEO Moonis Alvi’s explanation for the ongoing electricity crisis in Karachi, calling it “irresponsible” and not matching ground realities.
The hearing, held on Thursday, was related to Fuel Charge Adjustment (FCA) for March 2025, where the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (KCCI) raised concerns about severe loadshedding in the city.
In reply, CEO of K-Electric said, “We are unable to find ways to recover the payments and reduce losses. There are even areas where our staff are facing threats.”
NEPRA’s Rafique Shaikh dismissed this as a weak excuse, saying, “The people of Karachi are suffering and KE’s reply is ‘childish’ and ‘irresponsible’.”
“We completely reject K-Electric’s explanation for the loadshedding,” he said. “There’s a clear disconnect between the actual situation on the ground and the narrative being presented by K-Electric.”
He also added that the distribution system is failing badly.
It is worth noting here that in areas where the electricity bills are fully paid like North Nazimabad Block Q, power cuts have been reported. Locals blame illegal connections (kunda system) in nearby settlements for these cuts.
“We pay full bills, yet face loadshedding because of others illegal connections,” residents complained. They also said meat stored for Eidul Adha had spoiled due to long power cuts and demanded action from the authorities.
