On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) and Media Matters for Democracy, in partnership with UNESCO, announced a special fellowship program for journalists focused on digital rights and gender inclusion.

This fellowship will select 12 journalists from across Pakistan for a unique training program aimed at improving reporting on digital gender inclusion, internet governance, and human rights in the media sector.

The training will combine theoretical frameworks and hands-on skills, based on UNESCO’s Internet Universality and ROAM-X principles.

Topics include:

  • Gendered digital landscapes
  • Pakistan’s digital policies
  • Rights-based reporting methods
  • Investigative journalism techniques
  • Laws like PECA and digital safety measures
  • Story development and editorial training

Focus on local needs, global guidelines

The fellowship will use UNESCO’s global training resources, adapted by NCHR to fit Pakistan’s cultural and digital landscape.

The Commission will support content related to institutional responses, human rights protection, and digital security policy implementation.

Mentoring, Publication Support

After the training, each fellow will be paired with a senior journalist or editor. This mentoring phase will focus on:

  • Strengthening story ideas
  • Improving research and reporting
  • Publishing high-quality content on gender and digital rights
