954 acres of railway land encroached in Karachi division, 340 acres recovered in 3 years

Pakistan Railways

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Railways has set a strict one-month deadline for provincial Chief Secretaries to transfer the ownership titles of encroached railway land to Pakistan Railways.

The Standing Committee warned to summon the Chief Secretaries if they failed to meet this deadline.

The directive was issued during the committee’s 10th meeting, held at the office of the Divisional Superintendent of Pakistan Railways in Karachi and chaired by Rai Hassan Nawaz Khan.

Officials informed the committee that out of 19,594 acres of railway land in the Karachi Division, 954 acres have been illegally occupied by private individuals. Over the past three years, 340 acres have been successfully reclaimed.

The Divisional Superintendent pointed out that delays in transferring land titles from provincial governments to Pakistan Railways remain a major obstacle in recovering encroached land.

During the visit, the committee also inspected operations at the Karachi Port Trust in Keamari, commending the efficient freight handling processes. Additionally, members reviewed public facilities at Cantt. Railway Station to assess service conditions.

The meeting was attended by several MNAs, including Ramesh Lal, Waseem Qadir, Ibrar Ahmad, and others, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Railways and Pakistan Railways.
