NDMA warns of high flood alert in Sutlej

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning about an expected high flood in the River Sutlej within the next 48 hours. The alert highlights the potential impact on low-lying areas along the river.

India has already released water from Harike and Ferozepur into the downstream areas of the River Sutlej. This discharge, coupled with persistent rains in the catchment areas, raises concerns of flooding in Pakistan.

The NDMA has emphasized that the floodwater may result in the inundation of low-lying areas and villages, as well as the flooding of crops along the River Sutlej and overtopping of roads. The authorities have been directed to closely monitor the situation at Jassar, a border town in Narowal district, and Trimmu Barrage in Jhang district, which regulates the flow of the River Chenab.

In addition, the Meteorological Office has predicted rainfall from July 13 to 17 due to a westerly wave and the penetration of monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea into upper and central parts of the country from July 12. The heavy rains may lead to urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, and Lahore, as well as triggering landslides in Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Furthermore, the forecast includes rain and wind-thundershowers in various areas such as Barkhan, Loralai, Kalat, Khuzdar, Zhob, Lasbella, Awaran, Musakhel, D.G Khan, Rajanpur, Multan, Bhakkar, Layyah, Kot Addu, Sukkur, Jacobabad, Nagarparkar, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Sanghar, and Mirpur Khas from July 14 to 16.

Authorities and residents in the affected regions are advised to take necessary precautions and closely monitor the situation as heavy rainfall and potential flooding pose risks to the safety and well-being of the communities.
