Karachi gets its first innovative plastic-infused road

A plastic-infused road in has been constructed in Karachi with the collaboration of DMC South, Shell Pakistan and a  startup BRR enterprise. The initiative aims to tackle plastic waste and promote eco-friendly practices in the city.

Using the dry process method, over 2.5 tonnes of discarded Shell lubricant bottles were recycled to construct a 730 feet long and 60 feet wide road in the vicinity of Shell House in Karachi. By incorporating the plastic bottles into the asphalt road, Shell Pakistan aims to reduce plastic waste and contribute to sustainable infrastructure development.

Plastic waste poses a significant threat to the environment due to its non-biodegradable nature and toxicity. Research shows that a single plastic bag can take up to 500 years to decompose, while a plastic bottle can take around 300 years. By utilizing discarded plastic bottles in road construction, Shell Pakistan is taking a step towards addressing this environmental challenge.

Plastic-infused roads offer several advantages over conventional roads, including higher flexibility, durability, and a lifespan nearly three times longer. Additionally, the use of plastic reduces construction costs significantly, as plastic materials are readily available and cost-effective compared to traditional construction materials. This innovative approach not only contributes to sustainable infrastructure but also addresses the social issue of plastic waste.

During the inauguration of the newly-built road, Waqar Siddiqui, the Chief Executive and Managing Director of Shell Pakistan Limited, expressed his enthusiasm for the project’s success. He stated, “This is the first time we have used our discarded lubricant bottles to make a road, and I’m amazed to see the result. This innovative method helps reduce plastic waste and can provide an environmentally friendly option for future infrastructure projects in Pakistan. Innovative solutions like this should be explored and adopted to build a cleaner society.”

The introduction of the plastic-infused road by Shell Pakistan marks a significant step towards sustainable waste management and demonstrates the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship. It serves as an example of how collaboration between industries and local authorities can lead to innovative solutions that address environmental challenges and promote a greener future.
