According to WhatsApp’s official support information, Android phones must run Android 6.0 or later, while iPhones currently require iOS 15.1 or later. From November 30, 2026, WhatsApp will support only iPhones running iOS 15.5 or newer.

The change means that some users who have not updated their phone software may lose access to WhatsApp if their devices cannot run a supported operating system.

Which Phones Will Be Affected?

WhatsApp regularly reviews the operating systems it supports, focusing on older software that may lack current security updates or the features needed to run the app.

Android phones running versions older than Android 6.0 are no longer supported under the current requirements. For iPhone users, the minimum requirement will increase from iOS 15.1 to iOS 15.5 on November 30, 2026.

The upcoming iPhone requirement does not automatically mean that every older iPhone will stop working. Some older models may remain compatible if they can be updated to a supported version of iOS.

What Happens When WhatsApp Ends Support?

WhatsApp says users will be notified in the app before support for their operating system ends. The company also says it will send reminders encouraging users to upgrade their software or device.

Users whose phones cannot run a supported operating system may eventually need a newer smartphone to continue accessing WhatsApp.

Reports have also discussed possible login restrictions and warning screens for unsupported devices.

However, users should rely on WhatsApp’s official compatibility information and any notifications displayed within the app rather than treating every reported feature as a separately confirmed announcement.

How to Check Your Phone’s Compatibility

Users can take a few simple steps to check whether their devices meet WhatsApp’s requirements.

  • Android: Open Settings and look for “About phone” or “Software information” to check the Android version.
  • iPhone: Open Settings, select General, then About to check the installed iOS version.
  • Check for updates: Visit the Software Update section in your phone’s settings to see whether a newer operating system is available.
  • Back up chats: Before updating the operating system or changing phones, back up WhatsApp chats and media to avoid losing important conversations.

WhatsApp recommends using the latest operating system available for a device. Its official support page also explains that users will receive reminders if their operating system is due to lose support.

Users Advised to Check Before the Deadline

The November 30 deadline is particularly important for iPhone users running iOS 15.1 through iOS 15.4. They should check whether their devices can be updated to iOS 15.5 or later.

Android users should ensure their phones run Android 6.0 or a newer version.

Keeping a phone’s software updated can help maintain compatibility and improve security. Users should check their device’s update options before considering a replacement.
