Sultan Zafar was reportedly injured in an alleged traffic accident near Do Darya on July 23, 2025. According to police, he fell from the trunk of a moving car while travelling with friends.
He remained under treatment at a hospital for several days before dying on July 30, 2025.
Family Suspects Foul Play
Sultan Zafar’s family has maintained that he was killed and has demanded a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to the FIR, Sultan’s friends told police that he was sitting on the trunk of a moving car along with another friend when the incident occurred.
The vehicle was allegedly travelling at around 20 kilometres per hour when Sultan suddenly fell from the trunk and suffered a serious head injury.
Police are now seeking further evidence through the exhumation and medical examination of the remains.
Seven-Member Medical Board Formed
The investigating police officer said Sultan Zafar’s grave had previously been scheduled for exhumation on September 30, but the process could not take place. Sultan was buried at Shah Latif Khoi Goth.
Police officials said a seven-member medical board has now been constituted to oversee the exhumation.
The board will operate under the supervision of Professor of Radiology Dr Saba Sohail and includes a neurosurgeon, forensic medicine specialists and medico-legal officers.
The board is expected to examine the remains and provide findings that could assist investigators in determining the circumstances surrounding Sultan’s death.
Grandson of Prominent Doctors
Syed Sultan Zafar was the maternal grandson of renowned doctors Professor Syed Tipu Sultan and Professor Dr Sher Shah Syed.
His death in Karachi in July 2025 was initially treated as a traffic accident, according to the police account.
Following his death, his mother, Dr Mehr Afroze, donated his organs, including his kidneys.
The exhumation is expected to provide additional medical evidence as investigators examine the family’s concerns and seek to establish whether Sultan Zafar’s death resulted from an accidental fall or another cause.
The family’s allegations have not been established in court, and the investigation remains ongoing.
