UN Secretary-General Arrives in Islamabad for Three-Day Visit

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has arrived in Islamabad for a three-day official visit to Pakistan.
He will meet Pakistan’s political and military leadership and visit UNMOGIP and NDMA.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has arrived in Islamabad for a three-day official visit to Pakistan from October 6 to 8, 2026, at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

Guterres was received upon arrival by Acting Foreign Secretary Ambassador Nabeel Munir.

The UN chief is scheduled to meet Pakistan’s leadership during his visit, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.

Guterres to Visit UNMOGIP, NDMA

During his stay in Islamabad, Guterres will visit the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP).

He will also attend a briefing at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to review Pakistan’s progress in disaster preparedness, resilience and early-warning systems. The UN said Guterres is revisiting Pakistan’s disaster-management efforts after his previous visit in 2022, when he travelled to areas affected by devastating floods.

The Foreign Office said the visit will highlight Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen multilateralism, international peace and security, disaster preparedness and early-warning mechanisms.

Regional and International Issues on Agenda

The visit will also provide an opportunity for Pakistan and the UN to exchange views on regional and international developments.

According to recent reports, discussions are also expected to cover Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts concerning the US-Iran conflict and dialogue between the two sides.

The Foreign Office said Guterres’s visit would reaffirm Pakistan’s longstanding cooperation with the United Nations and its commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

UN Praises Pakistan’s Multilateral Role

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric has previously highlighted Pakistan’s contribution to UN peacekeeping and its diplomatic efforts to bring parties together when dialogue is required.

Dujarric said Pakistan had demonstrated its commitment to the United Nations through its peacekeeping contributions and diplomatic engagement aimed at facilitating dialogue.

Guterres’s latest visit is expected to further strengthen cooperation between Pakistan and the United Nations while providing an opportunity to discuss regional peace, international security and global diplomatic challenges.
