Mobile phone snatching incidents in Karachi recorded a significant increase in May 2026, rising by nearly 15 percent compared to April, according to the latest monthly crime data released by Citizens Police Liaison Committee (CPLC).

According to the released data, a total of 1,860 mobile phones were snatched across Karachi during May 2026, compared to 1,624 incidents reported in April 2026.

The increase of 236 cases highlights growing concerns over street crime and public safety in Pakistan’s largest metropolitan city.

Despite the surge in phone snatching incidents, motorcycle theft – Karachi’s most frequently reported crime – recorded a significant decline.

Similarly, two-wheeler snatching incidents also dropped during the period under review.

A total of 445 motorcycles were snatched in May compared to 469 cases reported in April, indicating a slight improvement in this category.

Vehicle-related crimes also witnessed modest progress.

Although the reductions remain relatively small, the figures suggest some improvement in efforts to curb vehicle-related offenses.

However, the report highlighted an alarming increase in serious crimes, particularly homicides.

Murder cases surged from 42 in April to 56 in May, marking an increase of 14 killings within a single month. The rise in homicide figures is likely to intensify concerns over law and order in the city.

Extortion-related incidents also registered a slight increase, with authorities recording 10 cases in May compared to nine in April.

The latest statistics indicate mixed results in Karachi’s crime landscape. While reductions in motorcycle theft, vehicle snatching, and kidnapping for ransom offer some encouragement, the rise in mobile phone snatching and murder cases underscores persistent security challenges.

Citizens have also been advised to remain cautious, particularly while using mobile phones in public places and when parking motorcycles in unsecured locations.

Karachi, Pakistan’s financial hub and most populous city, has long struggled with street crime and law and order challenges.

Mobile phone snatching and motorcycle theft remain among the most commonly reported offenses due to the high resale value of stolen devices and vehicle parts.
