The Government of Sindh has appointed Barrister Syed Ghulam Shabbir Shah as the new Prosecutor General of Sindh, with immediate effect, under the Sindh Criminal Prosecution Service (Constitution, Functions and Powers) Act, 2009, as amended up to 2026.

Barrister Shah is the son of senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and Sindh Local Government Minister Nasir Shah.

A formal notification was issued by the provincial Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Criminal Prosecution Department following approval of the appointment by the Sindh Cabinet.

Barrister Shah will serve as the province’s chief prosecutor and will be responsible for overseeing criminal prosecution matters, strengthening the prosecution system, and supporting the effective administration of justice across Sindh.

According to official details, Barrister Shah has extensive experience in constitutional, criminal, civil, and administrative law.

He began his legal career in 2009 under the mentorship of renowned lawyer Dr Abdul Hafeez Pirzada and has remained actively involved in legal practice since then.

He was enrolled as an advocate of the Sindh High Court in 2010 and later obtained the right to practice before the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 2017.

Barrister Shah also served as Additional Advocate General Sindh from 2017 to 2020, representing the provincial government in various important legal and constitutional matters.

The office of Prosecutor General had remained vacant since January 2025 after Dr Syed Fiaz ul Hassan Shah was elevated as an additional judge of the Sindh High Court. During the interim period, Muntazir Mehdi served as the acting prosecutor general.

The Prosecutor General holds a key position within Sindh’s criminal justice framework and is responsible for supervising prosecution services, advising the government on criminal law matters, and ensuring that prosecutions are conducted in accordance with the law.

With Barrister Shah assuming office, the provincial government expects renewed focus on institutional reforms and strengthening the rule of law in Sindh.
