The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has decided to establish special heatwave wards in its hospitals to tackle the impact of rising temperatures in Karachi.
The move comes on the directives of Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab, aimed at ensuring better medical facilities for citizens during the ongoing and expected heatwave conditions.
Special wards to handle heat-related cases
According to a spokesperson, dedicated heatwave wards will be set up across hospitals managed by the municipal authority to provide immediate treatment for patients suffering from heatstroke and dehydration.

Medical departments have been instructed to complete all necessary arrangements in advance, as temperatures are expected to rise further in the coming days.
Hospitals have been instructed to ensure uninterrupted electricity and functional cooling arrangements. This includes fans and air-conditioning in all designated heatwave wards. Essential medicines, IV fluids, ORS, and emergency supplies must be readily available.

Officials said that along with setting up wards, hospitals will be equipped with essential medicines, cooling arrangements, and emergency response facilities to deal with heat-related illnesses effectively.
The initiative is part of precautionary measures to reduce health risks associated with extreme weather conditions, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
Hospitals are also required to display public awareness materials about precautionary measures. Daily situation reports must be submitted to the KMC office. The directive has been marked as “most urgent” for immediate compliance.
Complaint and support system
Residents can contact the KMC complaint cell and designated helplines for information or to report any issues related to heatwave wards and medical services.
