What is Heatwave?

A heatwave is a period of unusually high temperatures that lasts for several days and can become dangerous for health, especially in a densely populated and coastal city like Karachi.

During such weather, the combination of heat and humidity makes it harder for the body to stay cool, increasing the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.

In Karachi, where temperatures can feel even higher due to humidity and crowded urban conditions, heatwaves can affect daily life, electricity demand, and outdoor activities.

How to Stay Safe During a Heatwave?

1. Stay Hydrated Throughout the Day

  • Drink plenty of clean water regularly.
  • In Karachi’s humid heat, you lose more fluids, so hydration is very important.
  • Avoid soft drinks and too much tea or coffee.

  • Close curtains or use shades to block direct sunlight.
  • In areas with load-shedding, stay in the most ventilated room.

4. Dress Smart for the Heat

  • Wear light-colored, loose cotton clothes.
  • Try to stay in shaded areas as much as possible.

5. Take Care While Outside

  • If you must go out in Karachi traffic or markets, use an umbrella or cap.
  • Avoid dark or tight outfits that trap heat.

6. Eat Light and Fresh Food

  • Prefer fruits like watermelon and cucumber that help cool the body.
  • Avoid heavy, spicy, and oily meals during extreme heat.
