Mayor of Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, establishes a vigilance squad and provides electric motorcycles aiming to improve monitoring and promote fuel-saving initiatives across the city.

Speaking at a ceremony held at the headquarters of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), the mayor said that a dedicated vigilance squad has been established and will be equipped with 20 electric motorbikes.

He said that in the past, city wardens were often assigned duties at private residences and relied heavily on fuel-powered transport, which increased petrol consumption. The new system shifts their focus toward public service while reducing fuel costs.

The mayor stressed that the electric motorcycles will not be used for protocol purposes but will remain the property of the city. KMC staff will use these bikes to monitor different areas and respond to civic issues more efficiently.

Highlighting the broader vision, Wahab said Karachi is moving toward green energy solutions. He noted that the KMC building has already been converted to solar power, while hospitals and water pumping stations are also being shifted to solar energy.

He added that more steps will be taken in the future to reduce fuel consumption and gradually transition transport systems, including trucks, cars, and motorcycles, toward electric vehicles.

Addressing urban challenges, the mayor pointed out that infrastructure developed by KMC is often damaged or misused. He cited issues such as illegal road cutting after construction and theft of streetlights.

To tackle these problems, the vigilance squad has been tasked with monitoring illegal activities, protecting public infrastructure, and preventing theft and vandalism in different parts of the city.

Wahab said the initiative reflects the city administration’s commitment to both improving civic management and adopting environmentally friendly solutions.

During the ceremony, the mayor also rode an electric motorcycle, symbolizing the city’s shift toward sustainable and modern urban practices.
