As temperatures continue to fall in Karachi, the city is experiencing a worsening gas crisis, with supply either completely suspended or severely reduced in large parts of the metropolis.

According to media reports, both household and commercial consumers are facing serious hardships due to prolonged outages and low gas pressure.

The situation has deteriorated further following the shutdown of key gas fields, resulting in a shortfall of around 45 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) after two gas fields in Jhal Magsi were taken offline.

The shortage has also affected industrial consumers, while residents across multiple neighborhoods have reported gas outages.

Areas impacted include Scheme 33, Malir, Saudabad, North Karachi, PIB Colony, Nazimabad, Shadman Town, Sir Syed Town, Kathore, Garden, Bohrapir, Akhtar Colony, Manzoor Colony, Chanesar Goth, and Gadap. Meanwhile, gas load-shedding continues in localities such as Liaquatabad and Orangi Town.

Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) spokesperson Salman Ahmed Siddiqui confirmed that reduced supply from the two gas fields has disrupted distribution in Karachi.

He stated that the loss amounts to approximately 45 MMCFD, leading to low pressure in several areas, although conditions have shown slight improvement over the past hour.

To manage the crisis, SSGC has taken several measures, including suspending gas supply to Fauji Fertilizer and temporarily cutting off gas to industries on Sunday to prioritize domestic consumers.

The spokesperson added that domestic users are currently receiving 28 MMCFD more gas this winter compared to last year, but colder temperatures have significantly impacted the system’s line pack.
