The Sindh government has warned that FIRs will be filed and offenders will face fines for burning garbage on Karachi roads.

The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Sindh Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah, where it was agreed that First Information Report (FIR) will be registered against anyone found setting garbage on fire in the city.

Officials informed the meeting that Karachi produces more than 14,000 tonnes of waste every day.

In District Central alone, around 3,000 tonnes of garbage is generated daily, making waste management a major challenge.

Sindh Solid Waste Management Board Managing Director Tariq Ali Nizamani said the issue was discussed in detail during a recent meeting led by the local government minister after town chairmen raised complaints about frequent garbage burning.

“Nasir Hussain Shah has directed that FIRs be registered wherever such incidents occur, and those responsible will also be arrested,” Nizamani said.

He added that Section 144 has repeatedly been enforced through the commissioner’s office to curb such practices, and action is being taken against those involved.

However, he noted that some people burn garbage due to a lack of awareness about the environmental damage it causes.

Nizamani said that earlier, Mistrict Municipal Corporations (DMCs) were responsible for handling waste issues, and there were more than 3,000 garbage dumping points across the city.

Since then, authorities have managed to prevent over 2,500 such incidents through stricter monitoring and enforcement.
