The National Cybercrime Investigation Agency warned users after rising complaints, advising immediate action if WhatsApp is compromised, stressing that early response can prevent misuse and protect personal data.

According to NCCIA, users who lose access to their accounts or suspect unauthorized activity should immediately uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp to regain control and prevent hackers from continuing to access conversations.

The agency highlighted that promptly re-registering the phone number on the app is a critical first step in responding to a WhatsApp hacking incident.

Officials explained that after reinstalling, users must enter their phone number and wait for a six-digit verification code sent through SMS on the registered number.

Once the verification code is entered, WhatsApp automatically logs out the account from the hacker’s device, as the service allows activation on only one mobile phone at a time.

NCCIA officials said this step alone neutralizes the hacker’s access, ensuring that messages, contacts, and media can no longer be viewed or misused during the recovery process.

Authorities addressed concerns regarding two-step verification, noting that hackers sometimes enable this feature to lock out the original account holder intentionally.

If a hacker has activated two-step verification and the victim does not know the PIN, WhatsApp may require a waiting period of seven days before access is restored.

NCCIA reassured users that during this waiting period, no one, including the hacker, can access messages or operate the account, maintaining data security.

Officials further advised that users who previously linked an email address to WhatsApp should select the “Forgot PIN” option to reset credentials instantly.

This option allows immediate recovery without waiting seven days, provided the registered email is accessible and secure, significantly reducing disruption for affected users.

Cybercrime experts warn that WhatsApp hacking often occurs through phishing links, fake verification requests, or social engineering tactics targeting unsuspecting users.

NCCIA urged citizens to avoid sharing verification codes, enable two-step verification themselves, and remain cautious of suspicious messages claiming to be from WhatsApp support.

The agency emphasized reporting incidents promptly, stating that timely action using the WhatsApp hacking emergency procedure can prevent financial fraud, identity misuse, and reputational harm.
