The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has finalized a major development plan to upgrade more than 26 key roads across the city in an effort to ease traffic congestion and improve daily travel for millions of residents.
The proposal, worth Rs. 9 billion, will now be forwarded to the provincial government for approval under the Special Karachi Development Grant.
A high-level meeting was held at the KMC Head Office, chaired by Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab, and attended by senior city officials including the Secretary Local Government Waseem Shamshad, the Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi, and the Municipal Commissioner KMC Syed Muhammad Afzal Zaidi.

During the meeting, officials reviewed multiple urban development schemes and agreed to finalize all shortlisted road rehabilitation projects so that work can begin without delay once funds are released.
The plan focuses on roads that carry heavy traffic on a daily basis but have suffered deterioration due to long-term congestion, increased load, and inadequate maintenance.
Major routes in District Central, District West, District East, District South, District Korangi, and District Malir have been selected for upgrades.

These include important corridors such as Hashim Raza Road, Shahrah-e-Usman, Al-Amna Avenue, Shahrah-e-Usman to Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan, Gulshan-e-Ghazi, 19-D Road, Faqir Colony roads, Additional internal connectors, Sehba Akhtar Road, Sardar Usman Ali Sabri Road, Nash Kazmi Road, Other key routes connecting residential and commercial neighbourhoods, Garden Road, Mirza Adam Road, Sarwar Shaheed Road, strategic adjoining streets, Jinnah Square Road, Liaquat Market Road, multiple adjoining access routes, Khokar Par Road, Mehran Depot arteries, and additional roads forming the core Malir traffic grid.
KMC has also proposed additional allocations, including Rs. 1 billion for sewerage repairs and Rs. 2 billion for street-light improvements, to support overall city infrastructure.
Mayor Wahab said the development package “will significantly ease travel for millions of residents, reduce congestion, and enhance safety and accessibility across all towns of the city.”
Once approved, the projects will be carried out on priority with strict monitoring to ensure timely and quality completion.
