Karachi may experience a significant water shortfall after another Dhabeji power breakdown affected the main pumping station on Sunday.

Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC) reported that a malfunction occurred at 6:35 am in Dhabeji’s second phase, damaging line number five and prompting two essential pumps to shut down immediately.

Officials issued an alert that warned the city could experience a shortage of nearly 100 million gallons daily due to a fault in Dhabeji’s transmission, potentially impacting major districts that depend on it for water delivery.

Emergency measures were immediately put into action to commence repair work on their pumping system and bring it back online, with teams actively working around the clock to restore normal operations and bring pumping system back online.

Dhabeji serves as Karachi’s primary water intake point, and even brief power interruptions can quickly disrupt supply in multiple locations, highlighting how vulnerable this critical infrastructure truly is.

Authorities reported that past breakdowns at this facility had an enormously detrimental impact on East and Central districts, particularly neighbourhoods like Nazimabad, New Karachi, Korangi, and Landhi where frequent shortages occur.

Early this month, due to a major cable fault at K-III Pumping House, water supply to various areas was suspended for 36 hours, causing further strain on Karachi’s limited water system.

Users at Dhabeji station have experienced several breakdowns this year alone due to ongoing maintenance issues, technical faults and unstable electricity connections.
