At least eight people lost their lives in a blast near the iconic Red Fort in New Delhi, authorities confirmed on Sunday, according to CNN.
The explosion occurred in a car close to the historic fort, but the exact cause is still under investigation, according to city police spokesperson Sanjay Tyagi.
Local media showed thick smoke and flames rising from multiple vehicles on the congested street near Lal Qila Metro Station.

Times of India quoted at least eight people died and 24 injured in the blast.
The area has been cordoned off. Reason of explosion is not yet known.

“As of now, I can’t tell you anything. Investigation is being done,” ANI quoted a Delhi Police official saying.
Delhi’s deputy fire chief reported that six vehicles and three autorickshaws caught fire, which were later brought under control by firefighting teams.
Residents near the scene described the chaos.

“We heard a big sound, our windows shook,” said one witness to NDTV who preferred to remain anonymous.
Authorities worked to disperse crowds that had gathered at the site of the blast.
The Red Fort, also known as Lal Qila, is a 17th-century Mughal-era fort located in Delhi’s old city and attracts tourists year-round.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the explosion.
