In a move to support education and ease financial burdens for talented students, the University of Karachi has announced scholarships worth Rs5.9 million for deserving students.

The announcement followed an agreement between the University of Karachi and a private organization.

At the signing ceremony, Vice Chancellor Dr Khalid Iraqi highlighted Pakistan’s higher education challenges, noting only two percent of students nationwide access universities due to financial limitations and widespread economic hardships.

He said weak industrial growth and insufficient government investment in education have deepened the financial crisis among the citizens, as many parents struggle to finance studies for their children, as unemployment continues affecting household incomes.

Dr Iraqi urged both government institutions and private organizations to collaborate in promoting education, which is essential to reducing dropout rates and providing equal learning opportunities for young talents.

Officials confirmed scholarships will benefit students from five Karachi University departments, helping them continue studies without interruption.

Recipients will be selected on merit while considering financial need, ensuring support reaches those most deserving.

The Vice Chancellor also noted that Karachi University runs alumni-backed scholarships within departments.

These initiatives encourage former students to give back, strengthening links between graduates and current undergraduates.

He explained the university remains the only institution in Pakistan operating a Student Admission Fund, created to assist academically eligible students who cannot afford tuition due to limited personal or family resources.

Last year, Rs10 million was allocated through this fund to support qualified students facing financial hardship. Dr Iraqi said such measures illustrate the institution’s dedication to inclusive education and equitable access for all.
