India’s Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem are set for a thrilling face-off in the men’s javelin competition at the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo.
Both stars, who claimed gold and silver respectively at the Paris Olympics, are expected to qualify easily for Thursday’s final at the Japan National Stadium, where Neeraj won his historic Olympic gold.
The showdown carries extra weight due to the rising political tensions after India’s “Operation Sindoor” in response to April’s Pahalgam terrorist attack, which killed 26 Indian soldiers.
India has blamed Pakistan for the incident, though it has so far failed to substantiate its claims on the international stage.
Calls to boycott cricket ties and the recent India-Pakistan handshake controversy at the Asia Cup have added to the charged atmosphere.
Nadeem won gold in Paris with a remarkable 92.97 metres, while Neeraj claimed silver at 89.45 metres. For Wednesday’s qualification, the two have been placed in separate groups, with action starting at 4:45 pm (Pakistan time).
The men’s javelin final is scheduled for Thursday evening, September 18, with a high possibility that two of the athletes will compete against each other.
Speaking ahead of the competition, Arshad Nadeem said he feels fit and focused, vowing to deliver another gold medal for Pakistan. He also urged fans to support him in a social media message before travelling to the venue.
