Karachi experienced heavy monsoon rains this week, with several areas facing flood like situations, however, is it record-breaking rain fall, lets dig deep into data released by Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
According to PMD records, the highest single-day rainfall in Karachi occurred on 27th August 2020, when the city received 223.5 mm of rain in just 12 hours which surpassed the previous record of 211.3 mm in 24 hours on 26th July 1967.
However, in the last three days of September 2025, Karachi’s Surjani Town area topped the chart after receiving 143.8 mm rainfall. The data shows that rainfall intensified from September 8 to 10, 2025.
In comparison, the recent spell from 8 to 10 September 2025 saw Surjani Town receive the most rainfall among city areas, with a total of 143.8 mm over three days.
While the rainfall was intense and steadily increased during the period, it falls well short of the city’s all-time records.

Gulshan-e-Maymar also faced severe downpours with 109.8 millimeters, while Surjani Town recorded 143.0 millimeters. The city’s northern side, particularly North Karachi, received 81.6 millimeters.
Jinnah Terminal and the PAF Faisal Base reported 38.6 millimeters and 64.0 millimeters respectively. The Korangi region logged 92.0 millimeters, while DHA Phase II recorded 74.5 millimeters during the three-day spell.
The total rainfall over the three days was highest in Surjani Town with 143.8 mm, followed by Gulshan-e-Maymar with 109.8 mm, and North Karachi and Korangi with 81.6 mm and 92.0 mm respectively.
Other significant totals included DHA Phase II (74.5 mm), Nazimabad (60.5 mm), and MET Complex (58.8 mm). The lowest total rainfall was recorded at Jinnah Terminal (38.6 mm) and P.A.F Masroor Base (45.0 mm).
Orangi Town and Saadi Town had incomplete data (N/R) for 8th September but still registered considerable totals – 47.2 mm and 60.2 mm respectively.
Meteorologists warn that this year’s monsoon rains have exceeded average expectations in multiple parts of Karachi.
Heavy spells led to severe waterlogging, traffic jams, and prolonged power outages across several neighborhoods.
Emergency services and civic authorities were placed on high alert to manage urban flooding.
