Mayor Murtaza Wahab stated that the city administration has taken precautionary measures to tackle urban flooding in Karachi, which was experienced in the previous heavy rain spell in the metropolis.

The Mayor of Karachi, in a press conference, confirmed that preparations have been made to address the flood situation in the city.

The mayor has advised citizens to avoid coming to the roads immediately after rainfall, especially during office and home commute hours.

“Such rush creates severe traffic jams. In the last rain, people rushed onto the roads, causing traffic jams,” he said.

Speaking about the city’s preparations, the mayor assured that efforts are in place to ensure swift drainage. “If water accumulates, it will be drained within two hours,” he stated.

Wahab explained that all 46 nullahs (stormwater drains) of Karachi flow into the sea. However, certain natural factors are currently affecting drainage.

“There was a lunar eclipse last night, which experts say causes high tides. During this time, the sea doesn’t absorb water but instead pushes it back,” he explained.

“Normally, water flows from Nehr-e-Khayam into Chinna Creek, but right now, it’s moving in the opposite direction—from the Creek towards Nehr-e-Khayam.”

While the administration has completed all necessary arrangements, Wahab acknowledged that natural challenges remain. “We’ve installed pumps at 14 underpasses for rapid water drainage, and our teams with machinery have been deployed in low-lying areas,” he added.
