The popular messenger application, WhatsApp, is set to introduce a new feature that will allow users to start chats without sharing phone numbers.
The new “username” feature will allow users to connect without exchanging phone numbers, improving privacy and giving users greater control over who can contact them.
According to WABetaInfo, the update is currently in advanced development and was recently spotted in Android beta version 2.25.24.22. It mirrors a system already popular on platforms like Telegram.
With this feature, users can create a unique username between three and thirty characters, including at least one letter, while avoiding certain restricted symbols or characters for security and clarity.
How it Works:
Here’s a step-by-step guide to how the new username system works:
Update WhatsApp
Make sure you have the latest version of WhatsApp installed. The feature is currently in beta (version 2.25.24.22 on Android), but will be available to everyone soon.
Create Your Username
You’ll be able to pick a username in your account settings. It must be:
- Between 3 and 30 characters
- Include at least one letter
- Not include certain special symbol
This username will be your new way to connect.
Search by Username
Once set up, you can search for others using the new search bar in the “Chats” tab. Just type their username — no need for a phone number.

Chat Privately
When you start a chat using someone’s username, your phone number will stay hidden. Only your username and profile photo will be visible. Everything remains end-to-end encrypted.
Even if someone finds your username, they can’t message you without your permission. WhatsApp adds a security key check to prevent spam or unwanted messages.
Don’t want to use a username? That’s fine. You can still use WhatsApp the old way with your phone number.
