WhatsApp is trying out a new voicemail feature. This lets users leave a voice message right after a missed call. It aims to make the calling experience smoother and more interactive.
According to WABetaInfo, a site that tracks WhatsApp updates, the voicemail-style feature is currently available to selected Android beta users (version 2.25.23.21).
Instead of just showing a missed call notification, the app now asks the caller to record a voice message if the recipient does not answer.
This approach is similar to traditional voicemail systems, but it uses a modern, instant messaging format. Right now, WhatsApp users usually follow up on a missed call with either a text or a voice note they record themselves. The new feature hopes to simplify this process, saving users some steps while keeping their communication personal.
The update is available for testers through WhatsApp’s beta program on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. However, the company has not said when it will be available for everyone.

When a WhatsApp voice call goes unanswered, users will have three options on screen, including call again, cancel, and a new record voice message shortcut.
This shortcut will also be available in the chat window with the recipient, enabling users to send a voice message without swiping screens. The recorded message is quickly sent within the conversation thread, alongside the missed call notification.
Voice messages remain one of WhatsApp’s most popular features, with billions sent every day worldwide. While traditional voicemail has decreased significantly over the last ten years, WhatsApp’s popularity indicates that a similar function in the app could become a common tool for everyday communication.
Industry analysts believe this new option could reinforce WhatsApp’s standing against other messaging apps, giving users more ways to stay connected.
For now, only beta users can try the voicemail-style tool, but broader rollout plans are expected in the coming months.
