China’s Xinjiang region has restarted seafood imports from Pakistan after a two-year suspension, marking a boost for regional trade links.

The first shipment, weighing 1,292 kilograms, arrived at Urumqi Tianshan International Airport from Islamabad via China Southern Airlines flight CZ6008. The consignment included black pomfret, prawns, hairtail, and grouper.

According to China Economic Net, the move follows two months of coordination between importers, customs officials, and airport authorities. Customs staff facilitated rapid clearance by streamlining inspections and ensuring compliance at all checkpoints.

Previously, most seafood consumed in Xinjiang came from China’s coastal provinces, increasing transit time and costs. The reopening of Urumqi’s cold chain facilities will now allow faster and more affordable access to high-quality seafood from Pakistan’s deep-sea fisheries, which are popular among Chinese consumers.

The Xinjiang Airport Group plans to expand import capabilities by seeking official approval to handle edible aquatic animals. Officials aim to leverage the airport’s wide network across Asia, Europe, and Africa to deliver fresh products such as cherries, lobsters, and salmon directly to local markets.

The resumption of seafood imports reflects growing cooperation between Pakistan and China, with both sides benefiting from shorter supply chains and improved trade efficiency.China’s Xinjiang region has restarted seafood imports from Pakistan after a two-year suspension, marking a boost for regional trade links.
