Bowel cancer, the third most common cancer worldwide, is increasingly affecting young people at alarming rates, according to a study published in The Lancet Oncology in December 2024.

Researchers found rising cases not just in Europe and North Africa, but also across Asia and Oceania. While the exact cause remains unclear, experts believe high junk food consumption, prolonged sitting, and obesity are major contributing factors.

Although rectal bleeding is the most recognized symptom, doctors warn there are several overlooked signs that could indicate the disease:

Anemia – Internal bleeding caused by bowel cancer can lead to iron deficiency anemia, sometimes visible through blood in stool.

Difficulty Breathing – Low oxygen levels from reduced red blood cells may cause shortness of breath, even with minor activity.

Persistent Bloating or Cramping – Ongoing abdominal discomfort or pain on the right side could signal intestinal blockage.

Severe Constipation – Prolonged, intense constipation may point to colon or intestinal cancer.

Changes in Stool Color or Texture – Black, dark, or oddly textured stools could indicate internal bleeding, though other conditions like ulcers may cause similar changes.

Health experts urge individuals, especially younger adults, not to ignore persistent digestive issues and to seek medical evaluation promptly. Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes.
