Pakistan has reportedly discovered the world’s fourth-largest oil and gas reserves in its offshore territory, a development that could transform the country’s energy sector and economic future.

According to Dawn News, top security officials revealed that a geological survey conducted over three years in collaboration with a friendly country has successfully identified the location and estimated size of the reserves under Pakistan’s sea, which stretches over 3,000 kilometers.

Former OGRA (Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority) member and energy expert Muhammad Arif welcomed the news but urged caution. “This is certainly promising,” he said, “but there are many ifs and buts involved. Discovering reserves is just the beginning extracting them is another challenge entirely.”

He explained that previous offshore drilling efforts failed largely due to financial constraints, and that drilling costs remain high, with initial exploration alone requiring $400–500 million, while full development could demand up to $1 billion.

“But if the discovery is real and substantial, it could pay off Pakistan’s external debt and change our economic direction,” he added.

Experts say even after confirmation, it may take 4 to 5 years to make these reserves operational, given the need for offshore platforms, pipelines, and processing facilities.

Arif stressed that until drilling begins, all figures remain estimates, but urged authorities to act swiftly and form strategic alliances with international partners to begin extraction.

Despite uncertainties, he praised Pakistan’s technical expertise in the oil and gas sector, noting that many Pakistani engineers are already working in top global energy firms like Aramco.

If verified and developed, this offshore find could be a historic breakthrough for Pakistan’s energy independence and long-term economic stability.
