A team of transplant surgeons at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) successfully carried out a deceased organ transplant, giving new life to two patients in need of kidney transplants.
According to SIUT, the surgery was performed in the early hours of Tuesday by a team of skilled urologists and anesthetists.
The donated kidneys came from Sultan Zafar, a 23-year-old dental student who suffered fatal head injuries in a road accident. He was admitted in critical condition and declared brain dead after a week in the ICU.
In a remarkable act of courage and generosity, Sultan’s mother, Dr. Mehr Afroze, a Consultant Nephrologist at SIUT, decided to donate her son’s kidneys.
The organs were successfully transplanted into two dialysis patients who had no living donors and had been on the waiting list for a long time.
The donation has been widely praised by the medical community and the public. SIUT Director Prof. Adib Rizvi commended the family’s decision during such a difficult time, calling it a noble act that should inspire society to consider organ donation.
“This selfless act has saved two lives. It is a powerful reminder of the impact one decision can make,” said Prof. Rizvi.
SIUT continues to advocate for greater awareness around organ donation, especially from deceased donors, to address the growing need for life-saving transplants in Pakistan.
