Amid ongoing speculation regarding a possible increase in electricity rates, K-Electric (KE) has clarified that it does not determine consumer tariffs.

In an official statement, a KE spokesperson explained that all electricity rates, including per-unit costs, customer categories, and usage slabs, are set by the Ministry of Energy (Power Division) under the national Uniform Tariff Policy.

These rates apply uniformly across the country and are not set by the power distribution company, KE.

He clarified that KE does not have the authority to change, increase, or revise these tariffs on its own.

Any change in electricity prices, categories, or slabs can only be made through an official notification from the Government of Pakistan.

The current consumer-end tariff, which applies to all distribution companies (DISCOs) including KE, was notified by the federal government in July this year.

This rate remains consistent for electricity consumers nationwide.

In a recent development, NEPRA (National Electric Power Regulatory Authority) is currently reviewing a proposal to reduce electricity rates under its quarterly adjustment mechanism.

Power distribution companies have submitted a petition seeking financial relief of over Rs53 billion for electricity consumers across Pakistan, including customers of K-Electric.

If the petition is approved, electricity prices could drop by up to Rs1.75 per unit for the July to September billing cycle.

This potential reduction aims to ease the burden on consumers amid rising energy costs. However, NEPRA will announce the final decision after its scheduled public hearing on August 4, 2025.
