In a major operation against the illegal meat trade, the Islamabad Food Authority (IFA) seized 1,000kg of donkey meat from a farmhouse in Tarnol.

A spokesperson for the Islamabad district administration confirmed that an FIR has been registered against the arrested individuals. Authorities believe the meat was being prepared for foreign restaurants and individuals.

Over 50 live donkeys were also found at the site, and authorities arrested a foreign national on the spot.

“We’re investigating the intended recipients and tracing local accomplices involved in the supply chain,” the official said.

IFA moves to dismantle illegal network

The raid was led by IFA Deputy Director Dr. Tahira Siddique, who handed over the suspect to the police. She directed law enforcement to register cases against all involved and dismantle the entire operation. The confiscated meat has been ordered for destruction.

Sources revealed that the meat was packed using sophisticated packaging, suggesting it was meant for export or elite clientele.

Authorities ruled out the possibility that the meat came from naturally deceased animals, citing the large number of healthy live donkeys found.

The initial probe shows the business was allegedly operated by a foreign national who had been residing in the area for a long time.

However, the farmhouse was unregistered for meat processing or export activity.

Meat association demands slaughterhouse

Following the raid, the Jamiatul Quresh Meat Welfare Association welcomed the swift action. During a meeting in Aabpara Market, President Khursheed Ahmed Qureshi and other members urged the government to establish a regulated slaughterhouse in I-11/4.

The association blamed the lack of government-run facilities for allowing illegal and unhygienic meat operations to flourish. They appealed to President Asif Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to take urgent action.

“A government slaughterhouse will help curb illegal meat sales and protect public health,” the group said.

Pakistan currently exports donkey meat and hides to China, but all such activity must go through legal and regulated channels.
