The ongoing dry spell and high humidity in Karachi have led to a significant rise in asthma and lung-related illnesses, medical experts warn.
According to hospital officials, respiratory patients have increased by 30 percent, with over 80 patients visiting government hospitals daily, and at least 10 new cases reported in private hospitals each day.
Speaking to Geo News, Dr. Javed Khan, a specialist in respiratory medicine, said the humid weather combined with poor air quality—due to a lack of rainfall—has worsened breathing conditions in the city.
“Moisture in the air reduces oxygen levels and irritates the respiratory tract, especially in asthma and lung disease patients,” Dr. Khan explained.
He advised residents to wear masks, avoid exposure to polluted air, and take precautions such as avoiding chilled items like cold drinks and ice cream, which can trigger respiratory allergies.
Doctors are urging citizens, particularly those with existing conditions, to stay indoors during peak humidity hours and take prescribed medications regularly.
