The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports has announced a major update with new Pakistani passports will now include the mother’s name alongside the father’s.
According to Director General Mustafa Jamal Kazi, the decision aligns with international standards and aims to address social and legal concerns raised by Pakistani citizens – especially single mothers.
Currently, official documents like CNICs and passports only feature the father’s name. This has created administrative hurdles for many women, particularly those raising children without a partner.
Kazi noted that many countries already list both parents’ names, making international travel and documentation smoother.
“This step ensures recognition of women’s identity and support for single mothers, while also meeting global documentation practices,” Kazi said in an interview.
What about existing passports?
As for existing passports, there’s no need to panic. Authorities clarified that all valid passports will remain usable until their expiry date.
The new rule will only apply to passports issued from the date of implementation, which has yet to be formally announced.
