Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training, Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, has announced a major expansion in Karachi’s higher education sector, stating that several new general universities are in the pipeline which will be bigger than University of Karachi (KU).
During an exclusive interview with Times of Karachi (TOK), the minister criticized past governments for neglecting the city’s educational needs, stating that in just one year, two new universities have been set up in Karachi, while Hyderabad received its first university in 70 years.
He also highlighted the establishment of a Rs 4 billion IT park in Karachi, calling it a major milestone.
Dr. Siddiqui explained that limited representation and authority had been obstacles in the past.
“We are currently searching for vacant buildings to house the new universities because in many ideal locations, either space is unavailable or the federal government lacks jurisdiction.”
He added that discussions are ongoing with the Sindh government to secure land and administrative support. “I believe PPP’s stated commitment to education will compel them to support the cause. The city that drives the entire country forward cannot be left ignored,” he stressed.
The minister welcomed the role of international organizations like City & Guilds in promoting technical education in Pakistan and said their involvement is a positive sign for the country’s skills development.
