A shocking theft took place at Frere Hall during the recent Muharram holidays, where rare World War-era memorabilia and other items were stolen.

According to police, the theft was discovered after the Parks Department office reopened following the holidays. A broken rear window at the Director General’s office raised alarms, prompting a complaint at the Artillery Maiden Police Station by the department’s deputy director.

The complainant revealed that five rare shields linked to World War history were missing, along with several valuable items including copper wiring, cables, a DVD player, a speaker, and other equipment.

The theft is believed to have been carried out by an unidentified person. Despite internal efforts to recover the items, no leads have emerged so far.

Police have launched an investigation, and the incident has raised concerns about the security of cultural and historical artifacts housed in public offices.

Frere Hall, built in 1865 during British rule, is one of Karachi’s most iconic colonial-era landmarks. Designed in the Indo-Gothic architectural style, the building originally served as the city’s town hall.

Today, Frere Hall houses a public library and an art gallery, and remains a popular destination for both locals and tourists, thanks to its lush gardens and central location.

The hall is named after Sir Henry Bartle Edward Frere, a British administrator known for promoting economic development in the region. Its ceilings are adorned with artwork by the legendary Pakistani artist Sadequain.

Standing in the heart of Karachi, Frere Hall is a proud symbol of the city’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

Officials say the loss of the World War memorabilia is a significant cultural setback for the city, highlighting the urgent need to protect national heritage.
