Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed the finalization of the Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (UAP) Railway project, aiming to boost regional connectivity and economic cooperation.

According to Radio Pakistan, this consensus was reached during the first round of talks between additional secretaries from the foreign ministries of both countries, held in Islamabad.

The dialogue covered a wide range of bilateral issues, including trade, transit cooperation, regional security, and land connectivity. Both sides reaffirmed the need for stronger ties and infrastructure development to promote sustainable growth in the region.

During the talks, Pakistan highlighted the threat of terrorism to regional peace. It called for strong action against terrorist groups operating from Afghan territory, stating that such groups pose a direct threat to Pakistan’s security and regional development.

Emphasizing the importance of the UAP railway project, both nations recognized it as a key driver of sustainable development and shared prosperity. The railway is expected to provide a shorter, cost-effective trade route.

Discussions also addressed the issue of Afghan nationals returning from Pakistan. Pakistani officials briefed the Afghan delegation on ongoing efforts to provide travel documentation. Since January, Pakistan has issued visas to over 500,000 Afghans under various categories, including medical, tourism, education, and business.

The two countries also agreed for legal cross-border movement, signaling a joint commitment to improved bilateral relations and cooperation.

Further rounds of talks are expected as both sides work to finalize agreements and address mutual concerns.
