India restores Reuters’ X account after global criticism

The X account of Reuters, an international news agency, has been restored in India after remaining blocked for nearly 24 hours, from Saturday evening (July 5, 2025) to Sunday evening (July 6, 2025), as reported by international media.

According to media reports, the Indian government has faced global criticism after the X (formerly Twitter) account of Reuters was unavailable to users in the country.

The account, followed by over 25 million people worldwide, was unavailable to Indian users on the basis of legal demand.

The notice displayed on X till Sunday (July 6, 2025) evening showed that Reuters’ X account had been withheld in India “in response to a legal demand”, Reuters said.

The email sent to the Reuters Social Media Team by Social Media Platform X said that we were terminating the process of halting your account in India, but no further explanation was given on the reality behind this decision, as per news reports published a day earlier.

This email confirmed that the block had been lifted, but did not explain why it was enforced in the first place.

A spokesperson for the Indian government denied any involvement, stating that no government agency requested the suspension. Reuters responded by saying it was in touch with X to understand and resolve the issue; however, the company did not receive a clear explanation for the restriction either.

According to Indian media, “a demand for blocking the account alongside several hundreds of other accounts was made during Operation Sindoor in May. While many of them were blocked, the Reuters handle wasn’t. An order was issued on May 7 (during Operation Sindoor) but it was not enforced. X seems to have enforced that order now which is a mistake on their part. Government has reached out to X for resolving it at the earliest.”

The country has already blocked access to numerous Pakistani websites, YouTube channels, and social media accounts this year.
