Rescue operation at Lyari building collapse site concluded

Lyari building collapse Karachi

The rescue operation following the tragic collapse of a six-storey residential building in Lyari’s Baghdadi area has officially concluded, with authorities confirming the recovery of 27 bodies from the debris.

Rescue teams, supported by heavy machinery, worked for over 48 hours to retrieve victims buried under the rubble.

The operation, now completed, saw the successful recovery of eight injured survivors, including several women.

A moment of hope emerged when a three-month-old baby girl was pulled out alive from the wreckage after 9 hours of the collapse.

The collapse occurred early in the morning on July 4, 2025, shaking the densely populated neighborhood of Lyari.

The multi-storey building came crashing down suddenly, trapping dozens of residents inside. The district administration has now sealed the site following the conclusion of rescue activities.

In response to the incident, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has announced a high-level meeting scheduled for tomorrow to investigate the reasons behind the collapse.

Shah has pledged strict action against those found guilty of negligence and vowed to hold responsible parties accountable. “We cannot tolerate carelessness that risks the lives of our citizens,” he said.

The tragedy has once again highlighted the critical issue of unsafe buildings in Karachi. According to official figures, over 480 residential buildings in the city have been declared structurally dangerous. However, residents often refuse to vacate these aging structures, citing lack of alternative housing and insufficient government support.
