Karachi is facing a severe water crisis after a major power breakdown occurred at the Dhabeji pumping station late on June 26, cutting supply to large parts of the city.
According to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), the breakdown was caused by K-Electric (KE) at around 10 pm, shutting down two pumps of the K-3 pump house.
The KWSC spokesperson said that more than 48 hours have passed, but K-Electric has not yet fixed the issue, causing ongoing water shortages across Karachi.
Due to the shutdown of these pumps, areas including Nazimabad, New Karachi, Landhi, Korangi, and other neighborhoods are badly affected with water shortage, the spokesperson added.
He also revealed that during this period, the city has lost a total of 185 million gallons of water, worsening the already struggling water supply situation.
Senior officials of the Water Corporation are said to be in continuous contact with K-Electric, highlighting the urgency of the situation, but the fault remains unresolved.
The spokesperson urged residents to use water carefully and avoid waste, as current supply levels are not enough to meet the city’s basic needs.
He said the Water Corporation is doing everything possible, but unless power is restored at Dhabeji, normal water distribution cannot resume.
