NDMA warns of urban flooding in Karachi, other cities

urban flooding warning in Pakistan

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert about possible urban flooding in multiple cities due to rain, storms, and thunderstorms from June 26 to July 1.

According to NDMA, Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Gilgit, and Skardu are among the major cities likely to be affected by changing weather patterns and intense downpours during this period.

There are strong warnings of urban flooding, especially in low-lying neighborhoods, where drainage systems may struggle to handle the heavy flow of rainwater during back-to-back thunderstorm activity.

NDMA has also mentioned the potential for landslides in mountainous and hilly areas. People living in these zones must remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel or hillside construction.

Citizens have been urged to park vehicles in safe areas, especially during high rainfall hours, and avoid going near electric poles, trees, and underpasses that can become waterlogged.

Jinnah International Airport Karachi issued a safety advisory ahead of expected intense rainfall and thunderstorms on June 27 [Friday].

The airport administration has directed all departments to remain on high alert during the upcoming monsoon season.

The advisory includes several precautionary measures; bird control teams must remain deployed at the airside, as insect breeding during rain could attract birds and increase the risk of bird strikes.

Airport authorities have been told to relocate or secure light aircraft in safer areas to prevent damage.

Drainage systems are also being prioritized, with the airport authority ordered to immediately remove obstructions near the perimeter fence to avoid water accumulation during downpours.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast hot and humid weather for Karachi in the days leading up to June 27.
